Our newly elected Federal MP for Dunkley, Chris Crewther, came along to speak to us on Saturday the 12th of November about his commitment to building the all-weather track at Civic Reserve, Mornington. During the recent election, the Liberals promised $2 million towards building an IAAF standard athletics track that will be utilised by Mornington Little Athletics, Mornington Peninsula Athletic Club (MPAC), other sporting groups including junior AFL clubs, and the 80 odd schools across the Peninsula.
Chris then lined up at the start line to take on some of our young athletes. After a false start (and a stern warning from the starter), they were off and running! Chris did well considering he was not dressed for the occasion, and it can be slippery running on grass in dress shoes!
We thank Chris and Flinders MP Greg Hunt (who was an apology on the day) for their hard work to secure this funding. The money will build us the track so we will finally have a home after 45 years. MPAC will also finally have a proper home, and our younger athletes will be able to visually see that they can continue on with their sport as they grow older. We will be actively fundraising over the next couple of years to contribute funds towards the extras we'll need that the $2 million wont cover. We look forward to the day we have our first competition at Civic Reserve!!
